Faces

This is a list of typefaces and sizes for which we have matrices for casting on our Monotype Composition Caster. Not all fonts of matrices have been checked for completeness and condition, so it may turn out that, although listed here, we might not provide you with type of that face and size.

There are two independent and unrelated systems for Monotype fonts: Most of the fonts listed here were produced by Lanston Monotype (the American company) and listed with ‘L’ as the manufacturer. A few fonts were produced by Monotype Corporation (the English company) and listed with ‘M’ as the manufacturer.

Monotype Corporation used a single number for a font containing roman, small caps, and italics, although we sell these separately.

For Lanston matrices, however, the styles are indicated by suffixing letters to the size, per the following table:

A, E Roman
B, F Small Cap
C, G Italic
D, H Italic Small Cap
L Typewriter
J Bold
K Bold Italic

Many faces appear to be deemed intrinsically bold, and so have only J and K suffixes. Suffixes A-D are used for modern faces, while E-H are used for Old Style faces. This distinction really only makes a difference when examining the matrices for figures, where Old Style faces can have either hanging or lining figures.

Monotype did not use these suffixes for display matrices; instead such distinctions were made by using a different face number. Italic faces were usually numbered by appending ‘1’ or ‘11’ to the roman face number, but there is no such correspondence between roman and bold faces. Display sizes, however, still used the ‘B’ suffix for small caps. In the following tables, italic display faces are numbered with the corresponding roman font’s number and a ‘C’ suffix. Display faces in general use A and C suffixes even though E and G or J and K might be more appropriate given the designations of the composition matrices.

Display sizes larger than 36 points will be cast on 36 point bodies with no space for descenders and do not include any lowercase.

A lowercase ‘d’ after the point size indicates that the size is in Didot points, which are about 7% larger than American points. These fonts will be cast on the next available size up of body (e.g. 10d will be cast on a 12-American-point body).

This table does not specify if the font includes hanging or lining figures. Which style of figures are included with any particular font is somewhat random, although in composition sizes, roman and italic of any particular size will have the same figure style.

Any of these discrepancies will be explained and checked with you when you order your type. Monotype has established standard alignments for all its faces, but if you want to mix new type with existing type in your case, you should be prepared to send us some samples of your type so that, if your type does not have standard alignment, we can match what you have. If we find your type does not have standard alignment we will inform you of this and you can decide if you want to match your alignment, or use standard alignment and scrap or sequester your existing type.

Properties

We cast our type using metal which is 74% lead, 16% antimony, and 10% tin, either new metal or used metal which has been tested and adjusted to this composition. This is Monotype’s recommended alloy for general purpose casting. The hardened metal has a Brinell hardness of 27.0 and, like most type metal alloys, starts to melt at 240°C (464°F).

One characteristic of most, if not all, casting machines is that the mould cavity starts off filled with air and that there is no specific provision to let the air escape as the cavity is filled with type metal. A small amount of air can escape through the joints in the cavity walls, but these are quickly sealed by hardening type metal. Most of the air forms bubbles or larger cavities in the interior of the type. It is important to avoid such cavities near the face of the type where they will weaken it, causing the face of the type to cave in after only a few impressions. The air that forms these cavities or bubbles is compressible, so the way to minimize their volume is to pressurize the molten metal as it is injected into the mould cavity. The cavity must fill fast enough that the pressure can be developed before the metal entry is blocked by hardened metal. Faster injection also creates turbulence which helps to break up the large cavity into a stronger network of smaller bubbles.

Our casting equipment is tuned to produce type containing only a few small bubbles near the center and thus will not suffer from premature failure due to crushing.

Our type is supplied in as-cast condition, which means that it may have a bit of flash—thin fins of extra metal along some of the edges. This flash quickly comes off with handling and lockup, but the first few times you use the type you should ensure that broken-off bits of flash are not under some of your type as you lock up the forme. When using new type we generally lock it up once and brush the face with a soft nylon brush (or a toothbrush), unlock it to allow any flash to fall out, lock it again and clean the back of the forme (a brass brush can be used here) and the imposing stone, and finally loosen the quoins again so the type can be planed before final lockup. You should also check your proof for type standing proud due to small bits of metal adhering to their feet. Once the type has been used a few times such measures become unnecessary but are probably good practice anyway.

Font Schemes

The font scheme determines how many of each character a font contains. There are two font schemes suggested by Monotype: Job fonts and Book fonts. The Job fonts are intended for small jobs that tend to involve more titling than running text and so contain more capitals and figures than the Book fonts, which as their name suggests, are more balanced for full sentences and paragraphs of text.

A full Job font is 74-a 28-A 10-1, while a full Book font is 74-a 8-A 10-1. Both contain a total of 1000 lowercase types. Job fonts are also available in half- and quarter-strength, which contain respectively 500 and 250 lowercase types and proportional quantities of uppercase, figures, and points. In the fractional fonts, the count of low-frequency types is slightly higher that strict proportions would dictate, so that you always get at least 4 of each type (except 2 for the fll ligature in quarter-strength job fonts).

Generally our fonts contain the same characters as are shown in the Monotype specimen book, although we will inform you when you order if there are characters missing from our matrices or if there are many extras (such as swash characters, accented letters, or fractions). If the font supplies both hanging and lining figures we will inform you which we have available.

Some of the faces we cast may be missing characters from the specimen book (typically ligatures or diphthongs) in which case we will supply extras of the individual letters as appropriate. Similarly, if we cast a font with extra characters not listed in the scheme (such as the double quotation mark “, single opening quote ‘ aka inverted comma, or asymmetric parentheses or braces) these will replace listed characters appropriately (e.g. half as many of each asymmetric parenthesis as the scheme specifies for symmetric parentheses). Again, we will inform you of such substitutions on ordering.

We can also supply fonts of just uppercase, lowercase, figures, points, or (if available—this is the B or F suffix in the face tables) small capitals.

Prices

Our type is priced based on total area, costing $5 per square inch, or approximately $20 per pound. As a result different faces in any particular size will vary in price somewhat depending on the widths of the actual characters and the font scheme, and the prices for different sizes of the same face will be more or less proportional to the square of the size, so for instance a 24pt font would cost about four times what a 12pt font of the same face costs.

Based on this, here are some recently priced fonts:

Number Name Size Book Full Job Half Job Quarter Job
L107 Franklin Gothic 14 $159.00 $180.24 $110.79 $65.92
L107 Franklin Gothic 18 $251.69 $285.52 $177.60 $106.66
L107 Franklin Gothic 24 $435.16 $500.55 $315.41 $189.78
L107 Franklin Gothic 36 $898.04 $1023.64 $638.04 $385.37

Because of its weight, shipping type can be very expensive, so you would probably want to consider picking it up at our shop if possible. We also can deliver your type to any of the book arts fairs we attend (Grimsby Wayzgoose, OCADU Book Arts Fair, CBBAG fairs, etc.) for a flat rate of $5 per full font, provided we have enough time to cast your type before the fair. Such requests are handled on a first come, first served basis as time permits.
